United Arab Emirates National Day (1 December 2009)

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was formed as a federation of seven emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain), which came together as one state on December 2, 1971.

The UAE has the world’s sixth largest oil reserves and possesses one of the most developed economies in the Middle East. It is the thirty-sixth largest economy at market exchange rates and is one of the richest countries in the world by per capita Gross Domestic Product.

The UAE is a founding member of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf and a member state of the Arab League. It is also a member of the United Nations, the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and the World Trade Organization. The UAE is one of the Philippine’s top export markets in the Middle East and Africa and one of its biggest markets worldwide.

In 2005, the Philippine Consulate General was opened in Dubai to look after the concerns and welfare of Filipino workers in the Emirates. About 175,000 overseas Filipino workers are deployed in the Emirates, which is one of the major destinations of Philippine contract workers.

We congratulate the people and the government of the United Arab Emirates led by Their Excellencies, President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan and Prime Minister Sheikh Muhammad bin Rashid al-Maktoum, and its Embassy headed by Ambassador Mohammed Ebrahim Aljowaid, on the occasion of their 38th Anniversary.
